America, Our Health is a Ticking Time Bomb

I want to share some information that I think every American needs to be aware of, and hopefully take action to solve the problem. America is one of the greatest nations in the world. Yet, America is one of the most unhealthy nations of all the developed countries. Please read this as if your life depended on it, because it does.

According to the United Health Foundation, the US had the highest spending on healthcare at 16.9% of the gross domestic product (GDP) among thirty-five developed countries. More than two thirds of the other countries spent less than 10% GDP on healthcare. In 2016, the US spent 3.3 trillion on healthcare. The US ranked 29th out of 35 nations for infant mortality. The US was 26th in the ranking for life expectancy. Despite the fact that Americans are spending more on healthcare, we are a very unhealthy nation.

How can it be one of the greatest, developed nations on earth, but be so unhealthy? For starters, the obesity rate among adults in the U.S. is around 35%. That means that more than one third of American adults are obese, not just overweight, but obese!

Second, Americans are sedentary! Eight out of ten American adults do not get the recommended minimum thirty minutes of exercise a day. A sedentary lifestyle sets your body up for many potential diseases. All the modern inventions that make your life so convenient also help to turn you into a couch potato. With all of your modern conveniences you MUST make a point to be physically active everyday. Your body was meant to move.

Finally, the Standard American Diet (SAD) is probably the biggest downfall to the health of our nation. Of all the developed countries in the world today, America is the most overfed, but most undernourished. Americans eat way too much food, but do not get enough nutrients. This is because you are eating highly processed, refined foods that are full of empty calories, but contain very few, if any, nutrients.

According to the Center of Disease Control (CDC), one half of all American adults have one or more PREVENTABLE chronic disease, related to poor quality eating choices and physical inactivity. Wow! That means that 50% of all American adults could be disease-free if you made better choices about the food you eat and participated in daily physical activity.

Come on America! You are smarter than this. Wake up and start making choices that improve your health, instead of cause disease. Think about what goes into your mouth...move your body...make SMART choices. YOU hold the state of your health in your hands.
